Born as a fishing village, it developed around the Tonnara Florio during the 19th century. Currently within it are two marinas, once for fishermen only. The name Arenella derives from the Sicilian word Rinedda, which indicates the very fine sand of the beach in that area.
Arenella originated as a small fishing village, built around a tuna fishery established around the 14th century by concession of the king.
There had already been a small port in the area for at least three centuries, which according to historical records was the landing point for the Normans to conquer the city of Palermo in 1072.
Until the beginning of the 20th century, the development of the township was closely linked to the entrepreneurial success of the Florio family.
